Spring clean and treats Traditionally the time of year to spring clean - we've lots of ideas to help clean your house in an eco-friendly way! Ideas for cooking and baking and information on our lovely salt producers.

Producer news - Steenbergs sea salt

When you think romantically about salt - you imagine sun dried salt from the sea - in the beautiful outdoors and coming to you without anything added or taken away and that's just what you get with Steenbergs salt. Our salt is sun dried in the Algarve in the South of Portugal, turned by hand and bagged nearby. The Fleur de sel is the cream of the crop - literally the top of the harvest and is a wonderful flaky salt. The traditional salt comes from the rest of the salt pan. We use this salt to create our popular organic perfect salt - mixing it with organic black pepper and Steenbergs organic mixed herbs - to create a wonderful all purpose seasoning that just seems to work with everything. We also use this salt to create our organic spicy salt - for those who like things with a bit more kick, organic chaat masala - more of an Indian blend, and organic Mediterranean salt.

New for 2009 - two new salt blends - organic salt and herbs for fish and organic salt and herbs for game.

Our other salts come from Hawaii and are again traditional sea salts - this time mixed with red clay or Hawaiian kalo (turmeric) for the yellow salt - both of these always go down a storm and are real conversation pieces for your table.

Back to basics

Last year we launched our organic vegetable bouillon, we now have a salt free alternative bouillon and three organic gravy powders, one designed for chicken, one for pork/beef and an all purpose vegetarian gravy to join the fold. They are all gluten free, yeast free and all suitable for vegetarian and vegans. These will be in new packaging shortly. Watch this space for more news.

Passion and pianos

At Steenbergs Organic we are genuinely passionate and enthusiastic about what we do. We love hearing from you and exploring new ideas, food, cultures and ideas.  Just recently we were swept away when sourcing new spoons for some photography and we ended up finding wonderful ones handcrafted from America made from old pianos, the craftsmanship and feel was superb. We've added new additional specialist spices to the website and will continue to enlarge what we offer in terms of organic food, baking ingredients and sauces and ethical groceries.

Spring clean

Traditionally this is the time of year to spring clean your whole house intensively - this seems to cut across many cultures it's just been the Iranian New Year and a complete clean is essential before the celebrations begin.

So whether you are someone who thinks nothing is more satisfying than cleaning or you maybe someone who cleans grudgingly, but whatever and however you clean we now offer a whole variety of ethical cleaning products - that are environmentally friendly, less chemicals for you to inhale, and some are even Fairtrade - such as our cleaning cloths.

And if it's all been too much for you, we've got some wonderful Faith in Nature shampoo, bubble bath and Clean soap for YOU! And if you still need to recover there's always the Clipper Hot chocolate or our organic Moroccan Mint tea to revive you.

Stockists news

We've just undergone a massive update of our stockists listed on the web. There's lots of new ones to find so you may well find someone closer to you than you thought.

In Scotland we also have two distributors so we are not always sure which stores will stock Steenbergs range of organic herbs and spices. We also have two additional distributors for our organic Fairtrade vanilla extract who operate nationwide.

As well as those listed by postcode our spices also appear in Booth's supermarkets including our organic paella and organic tagine spice. In Ireland another distributor covers stockists far and wide and we are also to be found in all the Irish Oxfams. Peace Tea and Green Tea are also to be found in the UK's Oxfams.

We endeavour to keep these lists as up to date as possible but if you find an error please let us know. If you would like to find out about becoming a stockist or know of an outlet that you think might like to stock Steenbergs please let us know.

Product update and recipe ideas

With Easter nearly upon us, there is only one baking recipe that springs to mind - Simnel cake.  Other delicious ideas inspired by our Arabic range of spices include Tunisian lamb roast or one of our favourite meals is a delicious vegetarian meal - spicy spinach nests. For sweeter ideas try our Moroccan orange fruit salad  or our date rice pudding. For more inspiration head for our recipe section, we add to this section the regularly but if you would like to see your favourite recipe published in this, please send it to us and we'll credit you with the recipe.
