Premiums are here again with a new look!Since we first started in business back in 2004 we've always had a premium range of spices. We've now improved this and we are all very excited about the new look. The tin is much more elegant and improved and the labels are considerably more updated and funky. We've picked out 9 of our top blends for the new look. They are bright and colourful and include some of our new Fairtrade products - organic Fairtrade curry powder, organic Fairtrade garam masala. The other products in this range includes our popular Arabic spices - za'atar , ras al hanut and organic harissa with rose. Also in the range are our organic italian herbs, organic mixed herbs, organic Herbes de Provence and organic Fairtrade 4 colour pepper. We hope to add more to the range later. As with all things at Steenbergs, more in our blog, we do like to take our time to make sure we've got it right. Let us know what you think of the new look. Celebrate Valentine's Day and Pancake Day with Steenbergs
February is finally here and whilst the snow is trying a last ditch attempt to flurry around us today - there are two celebration days on the horizon. Valentine's Day has in recent years gone a little overboard with chocolate, cards, flowers and soft toys aplenty. I was recently being told how in America it's a big thing throughout the family and balloons with cups at the bottom of them arrive at school for your children. At Steenbergs we are romantics at heart but it has to be said on a quick straw poll of us all the number one preferred way of spending Valentine's day was to have a curry cooked for you by your other half. The only question is which curry they prefer! For a more traditional way of celebrating we now have Divine's delicious dark chocolate with raspberries and making or receiving a cupcake with rose icing is a wonderfully romantic gesture of a more modest nature. Pancake day was traditionally the way to use up everything before lent. Nowadays we remember to make the pancakes and we even have local pancake races in Ripon - heading off the recent threat to ban them from health and safety - but they tend to be more sweet than savoury. With this in mind Steenbergs has created its own pancake box complete with delicious organic plain flour and three of our favourite organic Fairtrade flavoured sugars - lemon, vanilla and cinnamon - to allow you to celebrate with a new twist this year. Chillies - hot and smokySince we first started Steenbergs Organic back the idea has always been to offer a wide and varied range of unusual, interesting and high quality spices with ethics. Our new range of chillies is very much in line with this thinking. There are seven new ones in the range including the Naga chilli - currently the world's hottest chilli - according to the Guinness World of Records and our old favourite Chile chilpotle - a delicious smoky and not very hot chilli. The Hungarian cherry pepper also makes an appearance for the first time - the traditional spice in Goulash. For more information on these chillies - go to Axel's entry on the blog. Other new spices includes the almost mythical tonka beans - similar to vanilla in flavour but you grate the bean instead. There is lots of information about this and our new vanilla from the Congo on the Steenbergs blog. We're really excited about the new products and will continue in our search to offer you unusual and interesting high quality spices. It's one of the reasons we started Steenbergs - and we all love to experiment... New Fairtrade spicesWe were delighted when we pioneered Fairtrade spices in 2006 and we work hard with our producers to increase what's on offer and the supply chain. Recently we've been delighted to add three new Fairtrade spices to the range - organic Fairtrade garam masala, organic Fairtrade curry powder and organic Fairtrade cardamom pods. The first two of this new range are also available in the new premium tins (see above). We will continue to work with Fairtrade and producers to increase the range available and ensure that producers are paid fairly for their spices and social conditions improved. New products available at the Steenbergs online shopAs you would expect from Steenbergs we're increasing the range of goods available at our online shop. I think at the last count we've launched over 50 in the last month - so this is very much a precis of what's new in store. We've added water-based nail polishes and various natural waxing products. The former was inspired by a "beauty parlour" opened in our home by our daughter and a reminder of the fumes that traditional nail polishes give off. We came across Suncoat at the Organic and Natural Products show last year and were very impressed - it comes from Canada. As it's winter still - at Steenbergs we do like to stick with the current seasons and whilst some shops may be selling sundresses and flip flops we are sticking with winter - we've added organic lip balm and bird seed. There's a whole host of new products available and we are currently trying to reorganise the website to make it easier for you to find out what we have - like our enlarged range of Fish4Ever tinned sustainable fish products or our ever increasing range of sugars and syrups - including recently light muscovado sugar - due to popular demand. Staff choice - Alan
Alan is a man of many talents at Steenbergs but one of his favourite ones is blending. Favourite Steenbergs product: any of our curry range - it is great to use good quality ingredients to blend our products and all the different smells and aromas are enough to make your mouth water. Favourite non Steenbergs product: my razor (the parker 90R) and shaving soap - it brings enjoyment to shaving. Environmental tip - the simplest and easiest is often the most effective - turn everything off and don't waste anything. Stockists and blog updateFor a full list of your nearest stockists, click here and tap in your postcode. Whilst every effort is made to keep this list up to date we can only try our best. As we have such a large range most of our stockists don't carry the full range so if you are looking for anything in particular don't forget to call before hand. Our popular baking range and mulling wine go through distributors as well as direct so we don't always know the end shop. Axel's blogs seem to be as wide ranging as ever and have covered everything from the recent snowfalls, to unusual chillies, Queen of puddings and carbon footprints.
